Top 6 things to do in the Lake District
Rugged, untamed and beautiful, the heart of the Lake District has much to offer. Here are our suggestions of things to do on your trip.
There are cycle routes and mountain bike trails all around our site at Coniston. Some are flat, some hilly, some paved, some muddy. Chat to our site staff or visit our information board for details.
Check out the nearest National Cycle Route to follow a proper trail. You could start by heading south towards Torver or north over Lake Coniston towards Windermere.
The area is rich in trails and tracks to follow, both flat and hilly including the Old Man and Tarn Hows. Routes are detailed on the Lake District website and in our information room.
Many hikers favour The National Park’s fells, to enjoy the jaw-dropping views of the lakes below. Scafell Pike is England's highest mountain if you’re looking for a challenging route.
Water sports are easy to come by. Sailing, row boating, canoeing, kayaking and paddle boarding are run by Coniston Boating Centre and Joint Adventures. Rock climbing, abseiling and scrambling can be booked through Crag Adventures.
Swing from the trees at Treetop Nets and Treetop Trek.
Unforgettable wildlife encounters are run by Predator Experience. You could walk with wolves, fly an eagle on the Fells or get close to snakes and spiders.
Visitor’s recommendations:
Follow the footpath north over half a mile, along an abandoned railway line to The Ship Inn, part of the Robinsons real ale brewery. Enjoy dinner at The Steam Bistro in Coniston which has an ambient, welcoming atmosphere.
Have lunch or homemade cake whilst admiring the views across Lake Coniston at the Bluebird Café. If you’re heading north, Chesters by the River is also a great lunch stop.
Hang out with the ducks on Coniston Water and try anything from canoeing to dinghy sailing to steamboat rides from the pier.
Explore the Lake’s incredible landscape by visiting Wray Castle at Windermere, the Cathedral Mine Cave in Little Langdale or check out the Grizedale Forest sculptures.
You can visit many attractions within a 35 minute drive, such as the World of Beatrix Potter museum, John Ruskin’s House at Brantwood with its stone xylophone and South Lakes Safari Zoo where you can feed the animals.
